The National Society of
Minorities in Hospitality
Boston University
The hospitality industry is one of the areas of business, if not the only one, where the necessity of pure professionalism and humble hospitality could intertwine ever-so perfectly. The old-time idea that career development could be daunting is no longer true! We want everyone, from our old members to our new members to the executive board, to be immersed in a positive, educational, and simply fun environment. To us, NSMH isn't exactly about being a minority, rather, it's really about embracing minorities. The potential it has to make the industry mature and more inviting is extremely powerful. Hospitality is about learning what our guests desire to fulfill their most fundamental needs and in order to be open to every possibility, you need cultural and personal diversity.
The high caliber every NSMH member across the nation is expected to uphold is the start to the path of success. We help our members be active by planning events of different dynamics. We hold everything from general meetings, site visits, community service opportunities, career development workshops, dollar days to support minority businesses, and many other programs. We also pride ourselves in implementing our Career Development Program (CDP). We also have three major annual trips: the NSMH Northeast Regionals Conference, the New York City International Hotel Motel and Restaurant Show, as well as the always anticipated NSMH Nationals Conference. And of course, everyone needs a breather. By planning family outings with other social and fundraising events, our members get to interact with each other to create the ideal NSMH family. Overall, members have the privilege of gaining the utmost exposure to the industry in all kinds of outlets.
We also pride ourselves in implementing our Career Development Program (CDP). Every year, we contact industry directors and managers from various departments all throughout Boston to become mentors for our students, the mentees. This year we'll also hold a mix-and-mingle event prior to the opening reception for mentors and mentees to jumpstart their relationships. Our career development chairs will then match up mentees with mentors according to multiple areas of interest. The program debuts with an opening reception and ends with an appropriate closing reception. All throughout second semester, our mentors and mentees are expected to contact each other in a timely manner and form a valuable professional development. The beauty of this program is that members have the empowerment to do whatever they desire. Based off evaluations throughout the program, members have done everything from special property site visits, conversations, sit-ins on interviews and management meetings, even potentially becoming a future intern. The purpose of the program is to help our members gain one-on-one hands-on exposure and to create relationships that will not only last a semester, but potentially for the rest of their lives.
NSMH has established itself to be an extremely valuable organization. We like to tell our students, "What you put is what you get out." The value and commitment our members contribute to our organization will equate to not just any job, but their dream careers in the future. So yes, we do believe that the American Dream still exists. So please, come meet the BU NSMH family and meet your home in hospitality.
